Marble being a porous natural rock needs extra care to keep it looking new and shiny. Many of us struggle with the proper maintenance of the marble floor. If you are one of them, you are in the right place.

Waiting to know, right?

As a self-declared expert and from my long research in this field, here I’m presenting 6-well-proven marble floor maintenance tips for you.

So, stay reading:

1. Sweeping:

Dust, in most cases, mixes with the air, and that dusty air enters the house through the windows, doors, or ventilated passages. But, we can’t see the thin layer of dust through open eyes.

As a result, when we walk on the marble tile floor, the stored dust on the floor makes black stains by the pressure of our footsteps that results in deteriorating shininess of the floor.

As a part of the best care of your marble floors, regular sweeping is the best recommendation to keep your floors free from stains or nigrescent vibes. It is also important to be careful while choosing sweeping tools.

It is better to use a soft dust broom.  Or, you can use a self-made dry dust broom designed with a long lug and a soft microfiber cloth at the bottom.

The dry broom with a soft microfiber magnetically takes out dirt, dust, hair, and air-flowing grime stuck on the marble floors while sweeping.

If you are not able to make a dry broom yourself, it is another effective option for you to use a sweeping broom made of chan leaves. And, you can get it in almost every construction shop near you.

2. Using Mat And Rug:

It is recommended that you should use Mats or Rugs as a safeguard in a place where there’s heavy traffic, especially at entrance points which will resist your marble floors from stains or losing shiningness.

To keep your marble floors like new and shiny, using a runner is very effective because maximum dust comes through our shoes. So, if we wipe our shoes or feet before entering, this will prevent debris from making scratches on your marble tile floors.

3. Wiping Marble Floors:

One of the drabbest features of marble tile is to bring a royalty vibe to a usual house. Though marble is a natural rock, It is leaky, and many of us don’t know about its porosity. That’s why the maintenance of marble floors is exquisite, unlike other floor types.

Besides regular dry mopping, wiping the marble floor is important so that dirt stuck in the middle of two marble tiles can be taken away smoothly. But the question is, can you use tenacious brushes or usual chemicals applied on other floor types?

I recommend you not to apply all available cleaning chemicals used on other floor types because these may cause unexpected damages to your marble floors. Then, what to apply on your marble floors, and how?

You are excited to know, right? Then continue your reading in the latter part of this article you’ll know in detail about different DIY marble floor wiping agents.

4. Cleaning Immediately Any Liquid or Stains:

As marble is a perforated natural stone, it absorbs any liquid or stains, which can lead to dampness or loss of luster on the marble surface.

When any liquid inadvertently spills on the marble floor, my advice is to use a soft cloth or a soft microfiber brush to clean the stained area quickly with a mixture of mild detergent with hot water before spreading or absorbing. Then dry the wet area with a dry cloth.

5. Avoiding Cleaning With A Vacuum:

The strong air of the vacuum forces the solution to absorb quickly through the pores of the marble tiles which destroys or fades the color of the marble.

Therefore, my suggestion is for you not to apply any dryers to resist your marble floors from discoloration or staining.

6. Using Marble Sealers:

To take the very best care of your marble floors, and to keep them free from staining, fading, or cracking, sealing your marble floors could be the best choice. Unlike polished marble, plopped marble requires sealing before applying grout because of its high absorbance nature.

How to apply? Don’t panic! I’m presenting below 5-DIY-sealing steps. Stay reading, it’s easy to use:

Step 1- Ingredients:

  • Marble sealers (available home development store, or online shop),
  •  Choice a perfect brand (spray from Black Diamond),
  • Choose a long last brand (maximum 5 years),
  • One spray bottle,
  • One soft sealer coating brush,
  • DIY stone cleaner,
  • Hand Gloves,
  • Other safety measures.

Step 2- Purifier:

Fill the bottle either with a light detergent solution or, pH-neutral purifier. Apply the solution on the surface, and then wipe it. After that, dry the sloppy floor with the help of a dry cloth, and let the marble floor dry properly.

Step 3- Coating Marble Sealer:

Coat a deep layer of sealer across the marble floors. Make sure the marbles get wet and allow the sealer to absorb into the floor somewhere for up to 15 minutes.

Step 4- Wiping Off Excess Sealer:

Use a dry piece of cloth to strike out the residual sealer after the time limit mentioned. Now, allow the sealer to absorb into the stone properly.

Step 5- Applying Another Coat:

Nearly an hour later, use the 2nd layer following the same process mentioned in step-3. Finally, allow another 40-60 minutes to dry it. Follow the producer’s guide for the sealer before grouting. Sealing on the marble floor is done now, right?

You also need to be careful while installing marble floors. I often hear many people choose the wrong machine to install marble flooring in their living room, roof, or bathroom. Be aware of that.

6 Effective DIY Marble Floor Wiping Agents: (Practically Proven)

To master marble floor wiping, I’m going to present you with 6 effective DIY marble floor wiping agents used from household supplies without causing any damage on your marble floors:

1. Using Dishwashing Soap And Hot Water:

It is one of the safest marble floor cleaning solutions that you can easily make with the  following household ingredients:

  • Boil water (if possible distilled water),
  • A large-size bucket either plastic or metal,
  • Pour adequate boiled water into it,
  • Mix up regular dishwashing soap (pH-neutral soap) into the water,
  • Make a flimsy solution to avoid streaks while mopping,
  • Use a soft mop with microfiber at the bottom.

See, your marble floor cleaning solution is ready. Now, apply the solution with a soft mopping brush and rub it lightly on the floor.

It is important to make sure at this point you use a soft microfiber mopping brush along with boiled water. Hot water is effective against stiff stains, and a soft brush with microfiber works effectively to attract the dirt scattered on the floor.

2. Using Hydrogen Peroxide:

If your floor is tiled with mild colored marble, Hydrogen peroxide is the best recommendation for you. Unlike mild-colored marble, it is better to use a solution with Hydrogen Peroxide in an obscure area as a test basis first because it can fade dark-colored marble due to its bleaching agent. Solution formula with ingredients:

  • A medium-size Jar or bucket,
  • A cup of baking soda,
  • A cup of hydrogen peroxide,
  • Combine the mixture

Once you have made the solution, apply it to the spotted area, and wait 5-10 minutes. After that, gently rub the pasted area with a soft brush or a piece of a soft cloth.  Make sure you are rubbing the surface with a soft hand to take off the hard stains to avoid damage.

Using Hydrogen peroxide on marble floors as a cleaning measure is effective on fleshly and hard stains.

In case of hard stains on a large part of your marble floor, my recommendation is to apply a strong solution to the stained area and leave it overnight. As a result, you can easily wash it off with a soft brush.

3. Using Propanone:

Acetone or propanone, a colorless liquid ketone made by oxidizing isopropanol, is mostly used in nail polish removers and acts as a cleaning agent as Hydrogen peroxide.

And it is effective for removing hard stains or dirt, especially ink-based stains from both light and dark marbles without causing color damage on the marble floors. Formula to apply:

  • Use a cotton swab or soft cotton on the edge of a small stick like a firebox splint,
  •   2dnly, dip it in acetone,
  • Gently apply the edge of the cotton swab by wetting acetone onto the surface covering the stain,
  • Lastly, wipe the floor with water with a soft brush or a piece of a soft cloth.

 4. Applying Cornstarch’s Mixture:

Cornstarch is a common household element, and it is another effective marble clearing agent. As you have already known, marble floor cleaning agents are mild rather than harsh products due to marble’s sensitivity to stains

As a self-declared expert and researcher on marble stains cleaners, applying cornstarch, a natural rapid-absorbing powder, is another of my best marble floor cleaning suggestions for you. Because this natural cleaning solution is not only effective but affordable.

It is mainly recommended when you unexpectedly drop tea or coffee or oil on the marble floor and that causes stains. Then, a mixture of corn powder is very effective in removing such stains. Ingredients and applying the formula:

  • A cup of cornstarch powder (the amount depends on the amount of stain),
  • 1/2 cup of water (depends on the amount of cornstarch),
  • Make a  paste,
  • Coat the combined paste over the stain using  a soft brush,
  • Leave the paste to dry (if needed, keep it overnight),
  • Wipe off the seasoned paste with a wet cloth,
  • Repeat the solution as needed until the stains are fully cleaned off.

 5. Using Baking Soda:

The natural stone, marble, is attackable to acids, base, and harsh cleaners, and it is prone to stains, dullness, and scratches as its nature.

As a self-made cleaning measure and to avoid contacting your marble floor with harmful acids including vinegar or strong alkaline cleaning agents like ammonium hydroxide, I strongly suggest using baking soda occasionally, unlike regular usages.

Though baking soda is a light abrasive material and natural antiseptic, regular use of it can damage soft and sensitive surfaces like marble floors. The solution to apply baking soda:

  • Adequate baking soda,
  • Hot water,
  • A soft brush or piece of Cloth,
  • A piece of dry towel or cloth.

Once you have the required ingredients, scatter a little baking soda on the marble floor, and then give a little water drop on the surface.

Now, slightly abrade the baking soda into the marble with a soft brush, preferably with a piece of wet cloth.

After you have cleaned the stains on the surface of your marble floor, rinse them out with water immediately with a soft piece of dry cloth or towel.

Make sure, you have dried the surface thoroughly, and there left no mark of baking soda on the floor surface.

It is also important to confirm as a caution that you didn’t leave baking soda sprinkled on the marble floor than the extra time you needed. Because such delay can cause color deterioration or other unextended damages to your marble tiles due to mild Alkali in baking soda.

Apart from this, baking soda as a cleaning measure will allow you the following benefits:

  • Cheap,
  • Mild chemical,
  • Fruitful cleaning agent,
  • Well-proven stain cleaner,
  • Availability,
  • Natural alkali cleaner,
  • Easy DIY cleaning measure.

6. Using Ammonia:

Ammonia, a discolored gas with a natural sharp scent, melts in water to allow high alkaline liquefaction. It is one of the consolidated household marble floor cleaning solutions.

It is recommended you apply ammonia in well-air-passing areas and liquefy it before applying. The process of applying ammonia solution is under:

  • A big sized bucket,
  • Half a cup of Ammonia,
  • One gallon of hot water (preferably distilled water),
  • One mopping brush (should be soft) or sponge.

Now, you have the ingredients. Start combining the solution. After you have made the solution, dip the soft mopping brush into the solution, and gently apply it to the spotted areas.
